Guide to San Diego for Couples

Seaport Village

San Diego native and blogger extraordinaire, Angela Quisumbing, answers our Question of Week posed by one of our readers last month. The question? Where do couples go in San Diego?

“Date Night” is an essential part of any relationship. Especially if you’re married, most especially if you’re married with children. I’ve definitely learned a thing or two about the importance of Date Night. I know without it a relationship can become dry and drab. I also know, that with careful planning Date Night can reignite flames and create a bond you never knew was there. Yes, Date Nights are that powerful! My husband and I have been consistent with our Date Nights for almost two months; and we have seen a high jump in marriage morale ever since. We love to try new things, but as San Diego Natives, we do have a few favorites.

If you’re visiting San Diego for BlogHer 11, and will have your partner with you, I hope the two of you will have some time to spend in America’s Finest City. Yes, there will be so much to do and so little time, but here are a few spots that would be perfect for a Date Night in San Diego that you can then brag about to your friends upon your return. So take some time off to relax and enjoy the city with your special someone. We’ve got something for every couple.

Musically Inclined
If you love to sing along but not sing alone, The Shout House, a dueling piano bar located in the Gaslamp Quarter is the place to go. You will be entertained by their talented and very loud piano players as they battle it out in song. They serve a typical bar menu that’s not too heavy on the wallet. For a more upscale music scene, make reservations at Anthology in Little Italy. They have a beautiful venue where every seat has a great view of the stage, fine cuisine and a wine list that’s nearly 20 pages long. Not to mention, they have great acoustics for any jazz and blues performer or enthusiast, which means you can expect live music all the time.

If you don’t feel like dressing up for a night on the town head over to Basic Urban Kitchen & Bar located in East Village near Petco Park. Serving delicious pizzas with unique toppings that will work your taste buds, you will not be disappointed. You can’t go wrong with pizza and beer. Another beautiful venue, Basic was converted from a circa 1912 warehouse. The open floor plan, high ceilings, brick walls, industrial lighting and garage doors are sure to keep you feeling at home.

One of our personal favorite Date Night spots is the Gaslamp Strip Club. Now ladies, don’t worry, I wouldn’t send you and your man to a place where women are taking off their clothes, this is all about the steak. The Strip Club offers casual dining with the option to grill-your-own-steak. Yes you heard right! It’s fun, it’s interactive and it’s great for conversation!

Go kayaking on the bay, under the stars and the fireworks for only $25 a person. You’ll have the best view of the San Diego Skyline plus the fantastic Sea World fireworks display. A Date Night that’s sure to keep you on the edge.

Seaport Village will transport you back to when you were a child. If you want to feel like a kid again, make sure you visit this San Diego gem. Hold hands as you walk through this quaint little village or take an enchanted ride upon a real horse and carriage. Visit the many boutiques, share an ice cream cone from Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream or a cupcake from Frosted Robin Cupcakes after taking a ride on the 30-year old carousel. Be sure to make a wish at one of the many water fountains. You and your date will be sure to fall in love again with just one stroll through the village.

Dessert means love. Right?

Extraordinary Desserts, offers specialty desserts that taste just as beautiful as they look. They have two locations. However; I recommend going to the one on Union Street because it’s a lot larger that the one on Fifth Avenue; and because of that they offer a larger variety of desserts, as well as organic teas, coffee, food, fine wine and artisan cheeses. It’s a lot closer to the downtown area as well. As you enter the large glass doors, you’ll feel fresh and upbeat, you can sit indoors or outside on their patio. For a bit of nostalgia and sweetness, Ghiradelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop is a must visit. Have an old fashioned milkshake, with two straws, or share a banana split. Have a seat outside and watch the hustle and bustle of the downtown crowd.

Hopeless Romantic
There aren’t too many places here in the states where you can ride in a Gondola! You’ll have to travel to Coronado for this Date Night activity, but I promise you it will be worth the 20-minute drive. The Gondola Company is located behind the Loews Coronado Bay Resort. Take a trip into the lovely canals of the Coronado Cays, or Modern Venice as our gondolier called it. The cruise lasts about an hour, and starts at $85 per couple. Each gondola can seat up to six people if you have other couples who will be joining you. In addition, each cruise includes a warm blanket, a complimentary appetizer or dessert plate, the option to bring your own drinks (glassware will be provided) or purchase from them. Make your stay here memorable and board this unique and romantic cruise for two.

If you just can’t make it to Coronado for a gondola ride, there is always the Hornblower Dinner Cruise, which is an equally romantic alternative. Enjoy the scenic backdrop of San Diego from a bautiful yacht in the middle of the bay sipping on champagne in the arms of the one you love. The Hornblower Cruise last three hours and takes you through the San Diego Bay as you enjoy a three-course meal. After dinner, take a stroll around the yacht to enjoy the view or request your song from the DJ and spend some time on the dance floor.

There you have it, there is something for every couple in San Diego. If you’re staying at the Marriott take advantage of dining in at Roy’s San Diego and indulge in Hawaiian fusion cuisine. The menu is rare, and it’s not too far from your bedroom. We hope you enjoy your Date Night in America’s Finest City!

  1. Another great idea for couples is massage and chiropractic work. I am at an office right now with my girlfriend, and we have been here all day. It feels great to get up and feel like a new man, and once my girlfriend and i have been thoroughly “cracked”, the fun has just begun!
